Alcohol deaths and diseases are rising. Know how the spirit affects your body
FEATURES

New data reveals alcohol deaths have doubled in the United States. Research has also shown that even small amounts of alcohol are detrimental to health. What do physicians see in their OPDs? Are there more cases where alcohol has a direct effect as a causative agent or disease? Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, senior consultant, internal medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, says: "Yes, we have been observing cases where alcohol directly contributes to health issues, including alcohol use disorders (AUDs), other diseases, and certain cancers."

Chronic alcohol consumption is linked to over 200 diseases, with specific conditions like alcoholic liver disease (ALD), pancreatitis, and cardiovascular diseases being particularly prevalent. Even moderate drinking has been associated with detrimental health effects, such as increased risks of cancer and cardiovascular complications.

This trend is alarming, as it suggests that even small amounts of alcohol can have significant negative impacts on health, prompting physicians to advocate for more awareness and preventive measures regarding alcohol consumption in their patients.
