EVEN AS THE TELELCOMMUNICATIONS Bill, 2023 has paved way for administrative allocation of satellite spectrum, Reliance Jio, which was batting for auction of the airwaves, will not be at any disadvantage. It is just that the firm will have to strongly compete with big tech players like Starlink and Amazon.
Allocation of spectrum through auction may have limited competition to telecom players as it is unlikely tech majors would have taken part.
Unlike telecom, where owing to the different nature of services each service provider has to have its own exclusive spectrum, satellite spectrum is a shared resource and no one player will have super holding on the basis of bidding strategy.
"With the Bill paving way for administrative spectrum allocation, there will be a natural competition in the sector now, which will ensure affordablity of services," said TV Ramachandran, president of Broadband India Forum. According to him, auctions were not fundamentally possible in satellites and in case the spectrum bands were auctioned it would have restricted new players from entering the segment.
