KUMAR'S REJOINING THE NDA ENDED THE 17-MONTH-OLD COALITION GOVERNMENT RUN BY THE RJD, JD(U), CONGRESS AND LEFT PARTIES.
Vijay Swaroop

PATNA: The start of 2024 set the political tone in Bihar with chief minister Nitish Kumar making another flip-flop to become chief minister for the ninth time after severing ties with the Grand Alliance and joining hands with the BJP. He took oath as NDA CM in January. This was Kumar's fourth somersault since 2013. He first became CM of NDA government in Bihar in 2005.

With his latest somersault, JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar again proved himself to be the consummate politician, managing to keep himself relevant and staying the face of every alliance, irrespective of the company he keeps.

The CM for 18 years, showed his uncanny ability to shift political allegiances at will while maintaining his grip on power, abandoned the INDIA bloc he had diligently helped form, relinquishing his hopes of securing a "national role" in politics. This unexpected move sent shockwaves through the political landscape, signaling yet another twist in Kumar's ever-changing political journey.

Kumar's rejoining the NDA ended the 17-month-old coalition government run by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Janata Dal (United), Congress and Left parties. He ended the day with a swearing-in ceremony for the third time in four years, and ninth since 2005.
