Leader of Opposition, Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, claimed that Parliament Somnath Suryavanshi was killed in judicial custody because he was a Dalit and was acting against the Constitution. Police have killed him, the minister (Devendra) lied in the assembly to give a message to the police. He was killed because he is Dalit. His philosophy is against the Constitution," Gandhi said in Pune after meeting Suryavanshi's family and demanded strong action against those responsible for his death.

Suryavanshi, 35, was arrested after violence erupted in Parbhani when a glass-enclosed picture of the Constitution near Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue outside the railway premises was vandalized on December 14. He died on December 15 in a government-run hospital where he was admitted for treatment after complaining of chest pain and breathlessness while he was lodged at the Parbhani jail, as per police. Suryavanshi's relatives alleged that he was tortured in custody which led to his death while chief minister Fadnavis claimed he had died due to pre-existing illness. The post-mortem report noted that he died because of injuries.
