State's forest cover reduced by 22.98 sqkm since 2021: Report

The total forest cover in Uttarakhand has witnessed a marginal decrease of 22.98 square kilometers (sqkm) since 2021, according to the "India State of Forest Report 2023" that was released on Saturday.

DEHRADUN:

The total forest cover of the hill state is 24,303 sqkm, which is 45.44% of the total geographical area (53,483 sqkm), while earlier it was recorded as 24,326 sqkm, the report said.

Of the total forest cover, very dense forest is spread over 5,266 sqkm, moderately dense forest on 12,517 sqkm, and open forest on 6,519 sqkm, it further said.

There was a sharp reduction of 229.15 sqkm of moderately dense forest (MDF) (tree canopy density of 40-70%). The open forest (OF) (tree canopy density of 10-40%) also saw a reduction of 19.23 sqkm. The very dense forest (VDF) (tree canopy density of 70% or above) saw an increase of 225.4 sqkm.
