In 2017, singer Sam Smith said in an IGTV interview with actor Jameela Jamil, "I'm not male or female. I feel I float somewhere in between." The singer later wrote on Instagram that they had officially changed their pronouns.

Monáe came out as nonbinary in 2020, tweeting a Steven Universe meme that read "Are you a boy or a girl? I'm an experience". They later told The Cut in an interview: "I feel my feminine energy, my masculine energy, energy! can't even explain."
