Brolly good fun

IRISH eyes were smiling at Fairyhouse yesterday as I Am Maximus romped home to victory in the Grand National, much to the delight of trainer Willie Mullins and owner JP McManus.

The seven-year-old was an 8-1 chance in the t three-mile-five-furlong feature for the all-conquering Mullins and jockey Paul Townend.

The win was all the more remarkable as the JP McManus-owned gelding looked set to finish out of the placings late into the race.

However, I Am Maximus came to the fore just at the right time as contenders dropped away and he romped home to victory.

Afterwards, Townend admitted he didn't think he was going to win.
