New defamation laws on the way

THE body representing newspapers has tentatively welcomed changes to Ireland's defamation laws but is concerned they do not place a cap on damages.

Justice Minister Simon Harris received approval for draft legislation at Cabinet yesterday.

Ireland's defamation laws are among the strictest in Europe and have been criticised by the EU.

Under the proposals, if a person is defamed, a correction must be published with equal prominence.

They also includes ensuring more accessible takedown and correction for a person who has been defamed, providing stronger and clearer legal protection for responsible public interest journalism.
