A LEADING dog rehoming charity fears cases of neglect and abandonment will continue to increase as many rescue centres and shelters are full.

It comes as surrender of dog requests are at an all-time high and rescues and pounds around the country cannot keep up with the demand to take pets in.

Dogs Trust Ireland said the huge rise in the number of people looking to surrender pooches into their care is extremely worrying.

It recently took in an abandoned and emaciated three-year-old Lurcher who had just given birth.

The malnourished animal , Rainbow, had been found after it wandered into a couple’s garden on St Patrick’s Day.
