Of United’s 33 shots, the trio had 16 of them and didn’t find the back of the net. In a side that hasn’t scored enough goals this season that is an obvious area of concern, but it’s also a trio that haven’t played together often enough and who showed enough promise to think they must now be the first-choice for Erik ten Hag.
The United manager has been denied the chance to field a consistent side this season, with injuries and illness a constant headache for him. Garnacho, Rashford and Hojlund looked superb against Aston Villa, but then Hojlund was ill at Forest. Antony took his place that day, but the Brazilian missed the Wigan game with injury.
That meant a return to a front three that had started together just three times this season, playing 42 minutes against FC Copenhagen, 68 minutes against Luton and that thrilling 80 minutes against Villa.
