TOWN HALL CHIEFS WANT TO DEMOLISH BUILDING AS PART OF MANSION PLANS

Group's battle to save historic greenhouse

AFTER more than two decades of municipal and entrepreneurial inertia, Salford council is bristling with pride over the restoration of a Georgian mansion in one of its parks. But the controversy is not over.

The mansion, a Grade II-listed building in Buile Hill Park, had been at the mercy of the elements, vandals, failed plans to turn it into a hotel and council inaction.

It has been closed ever since the Lancashire Mining Museum, which was housed there, was dismantled and moved 23 years ago. It is now being repaired and refurbished at an estimated cost of £5.5m and will become a new base for Salford's Registry Office, alongside a cafe and function room.

But a group is now campaigning for an Edwardian greenhouse also in Buile Hill Park to be saved from demolition. The council has confirmed a wrecking crew is due to move in on January 8 - but 1,297 people have signed an online petition to save it.
