James Mitchell lost his life after his bike ploughed into a barrier between on Moss Bank Way, between Captains Clough Road and Halliwell Road, in Bolton.
Despite the best efforts of paramedics, James died at the scene of the crash. Police said that he had been riding along the road between 10.40pm and 11.10pm on Tuesday.
A scene remained in place overnight as Moss Bank Way remained closed into Wednesday, with officers from the Serious Collision Investigations Unit leading the probe.
