Onana out to make up for costly error in Europe

AS BAYERN Munich celebrated their opening goal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was probably praying that the turf would open up and swallow him.

On his first European outing in United colours, Onana, who helped former club Inter Milan reach the Champions League final last season, was guilty of committing a costly error that led to Bayern making the breakthrough just before the half-hour mark. He failed to set himself in time for Leroy Sane's effort and the shot squirmed through his hands and into the net.

Having made a good fist of proceedings in the opening 28 minutes, it was a sucker punch for United, who should have taken an early lead. Onana knew he had dropped a clanger.

Though United conceded a further three goals before the end, Onana, who made some smart stops in the second half, could not be blamed for any of the other goals that were sieved. Frailties within the defensive line in front of him were more worthy of attracting the blame.
