ED CHATTERTON
Royal secrets of the butler to the stars

BY the end of his career, Alan Fisher had worked for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Charles and Diana, Bing Crosby, Ralph Lauren and Robert Lehman.

He rose from the back streets of Manchester to become one of the most sought after butlers in the world.

Now, his unpublished memoirs have to come to light, giving a fascinating insight into life with the former Edward VIII and his wife Wallis Simpson, which have stayed under wraps- until now.

Alan served as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor's butler for six years from 1954, almost 20 years after the Duke abdicated the throne to marry Simpson.

The manuscript and papers are now expected to fetch between £3,000-£5,000 when they are sold by Rare Books Auctions on June 4.

The sale also includes a neverbefore-seen photo of Edward in royal robes, with Wallis at his side.

Alan put pen to paper in 1978 to record memories of his time with the Duke and Duchess at their home in Bois de Boulogne, France.
