According to the authorities, Thiruvengadam attempted to flee custody and opened fire at the police, prompting them to retaliate.
The incident has sparked controversy, with Opposition leaders questioning the police's account and renewing their demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into Armstrong's murder.
Police stated that Thiruvengadam was being escorted to Manali in North Chennai to recover weapons allegedly hidden in the area. During a halt near a lake, Thiruvengadam reportedly pushed the policemen escorting him and fled. He was later located in the 'Vegetarian Village' area within the Puzhal police station limits.
