NAGPUR: A total of 39 legislators from Mahayuti allies were sworn into the 10-day-old Devendra Fadnavis-led government on Sunday, marking the first Cabinet expansion of the BJP-led alliance in Maharashtra. The event introduced 16 new faces while excluding several prominent leaders, underscoring the challenges of balancing aspirations within a coalition government. Chief Minister Fadnavis said that portfolios will be allocated to new ministers in the next two to three days.
The ceremony, held at Raj Bhavan in Nagpur, was officiated by Governor CP Radhakrishnan. The expansion brought the council of ministers' strength to 42, leaving one berth vacant. The BJP, Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde), and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) shared the ministerial berths in a 19:11:9 ratio.
While Fadnavis didn't mention any timeline, Deputy CM and Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde said the ministers of his party will get two-and-a-half years, and those who perform will progress.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar addressed his party workers just hours before the swearing-in ceremony, acknowledging the constraints in accommodating all hopefuls. "Everyone feels like getting an opportunity to become a minister. However, the ministerial berths remain limited while everyone deserves a chance," Pawar remarked.
