The Supreme Court on Friday issued a strong statement defending press freedom, asserting that journalists should not face criminal cases simply because their reporting is perceived as criticism of the government.
Hearing a petition from journalist Abhishek Upadhyay seeking to quash an FIR filed against him in Uttar Pradesh, the bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S V N Bhatti emphasised the constitutional protection of journalistic rights under Article 19(1)(a).
