He has written to chief constables in England and Wales urging them to nominate officers from lower ranks so their gallantry will be celebrated.
The call to recognise the heroes in their ranks comes days after two were seriously hurt after rushing to stop the sword attack in the London suburb of Hainault in which 14-year-old Daniel Anjorin was killed and four people were injured.
A male officer has now been discharged from hospital while his female colleague recovers.
