Delhi faces hazardous air quality, severe pollution from stubble burning, vehicular emissions, and delayed measures, highlighting urgent climate challenges.
DELHI AIR EMERGENCY

India stands at the forefront of the global fight against climate change, grappling with its consequences while striving to implement effective solutions. One of the most pressing manifestations of th is crisis is the recurring air pollution, particularly in the National Capital Region (NCR), where the Air Quality Index (AQI) frequently enters hazardous levels. Beyond air quality, India's engagement in global climate policies, adaptation strategies, and renewable energy transitions showcases a complex narrative of challenges and opportunities.

AIR POLLUTION CRISIS IN DELHI AND NCR

The winter months in Delhi have become synonymous with a toxic smog that blankets the city, severely impacting public health and daily life. In November 2024, the 24-hour average AQI in Delhi reached alarming levels, peaking at 444 on Tuesday, November 19, before slightly improving to 419 the next day. However, these levels remain far above the "severe" threshold of 400, indicating widespread adverse effects on health.

Prominent areas such as Anand Vihar (AQI 406), Jahangirpuri (437), and Ashok Vihar (416) recorded some of the worst air quality readings. Visuals of residents jogging near India Gate amidst smog encapsulate the dire situation, where outdoor activities have become a health risk. The toxic air is a mix of pollutants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide, all of which exacerbate respiratory and cardiovascular issues.
