The India-China border dispute is a complex and long-standing territorial conflict rooted in differing perceptions of the 3,440 km Line of Actual Control (LAC), which spans the rugged Himalayan terrain. This conflict traces its origins to the 1914 McMahon Line, which China refused to recognise, and escalated into a full-scale war in 1962, resulting in China's occupation of Aksai Chin, a territory India claims. Over the decades, various skirmishes, including the 1967 Nathu La clashes and the 1987 Sumdorong Chu standoff, have further inflamed tensions. Despite confidence-building measures in the 1990s, border incursions continued, culminating in the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Since then, ongoing diplomatic talks have sought to de-escalate tensions, though both sides maintain significant military deployments along the LAC, particularly in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. As of 2024, the border dispute remains unresolved, with diplomatic engagement continuing alongside periodic military confrontations
