Assam has made remarkable progress in reducing multi-dimensional poverty, witnessing a significant decline of 13.30 percentage points from 32.65 per cent in 2015-16 to 19.35 per cent in 2019-2021. This improvement has led to approximately 46.87 lakh people escaping multidimensional poverty in the state.
The ‘National Multidimensional Poverty Index: A Progress Review 2023,’ released by Niti Aayog earlier this week, shed light on the positive developments. The report highlighted that the rural areas of Assam experienced a substantial decline in poverty, going from 36.14 per cent to 21.41 per cent, while the urban areas also saw improvement, reducing from 9.94 per cent to 6.88 per cent.
