Messages have a sense of emergency or an offer that's too good to be true.

Police have warned that phishing scams and social media hacks are on the rise.

Constable Audrey Buthelezi, communications officer for the South African Police Service (Saps) in Brakpan, shared tips on how to spot and avoid phishing scams.

"It has come to the attention of Saps that criminals are making efforts to become more technologically advanced as businesses and individuals become more reliant on the internet," she said.
