Three employees of Western Railway (WR) lost their lives while attending to a points failure between Vasai Road and Naigaon railway stations on the western suburban line on Monday. The deceased have been identified as Chief Signal Inspector Vasu Mitra, 55, Signal & Telecom Assistant (helper) Sachin Wankhede,36, and Signal Maintainer Somnath Uttam Lambture, 36. All three were run over by a speeding Up local train. WR has initiated an inquiry into the tragic incident, which occurred at 8.52pm on January 22.
While Mitra is survived by his 17-year-old son and wife, Lambture is survived by his wife and a three-year-old daughter and Wankhede is survived by his mother.
According to a senior WR official, the employees were sent to fix the points failure, but tragedy struck when a local train ran over them. The accident halted the Up local train for approximately 40 minutes.
