Military says it targeted senior Hamas commanders in Gaza
40 killed in humanitarian camp

Israeli strikes blasted a huge crater in a designated safe zone in southern Gaza before dawn on Tuesday, setting tents ablaze and burying Palestinian families under the sand. Quoting Palestinian officials, Reuters said scores of people had been killed or injured in one of the deadliest strikes by Israel, with at least 19 dead bodies brought to hospital and other victims feared lost or buried while Associated Press sources put the toll at at least 40, adding 60 people had been injured.

A report from Jerusalem said the Israeli military said on Tuesday that it struck senior Hamas commanders who were operating in a command centre embedded inside a designated humanitarian area in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis. It said its forces used precise munitions, aerial surveillance and other means to avoid civilian casualties.
