The long-postponed decadal census will commence in early 2025, and the findings will be released by 2026. Also, hereafter the regular census cycle will be in 2035, 2045, and 2055.
The last time census was recorded in India was in 2011. The next round was to begin in 2021, but the second wave of Covid-19 delayed it.
The census aims at collecting comprehensive data on India's population, including information on religion, class, and caste categories such as General, Scheduled Caste, and Scheduled Tribe.
However, no formal decision has been taken on conducting a caste census, an omission that has stirred considerable debate. Despite calls from the opposition Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) for a caste-based census to capture data on the country's Other Backward Classes (OBCs), government insiders suggest the proposal remains unresolved.
