Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in an open letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said people were suffering with "backbreaking inflation", and that having 9 pre-Budget consultations would have no meaning if it is not directed at containing inflation.

In the letter, posted on "X", Kharge asked the PM if there was "any plan to increase public savings in the budget?" He also asked if the government would "continue to trouble the public with backbreaking inflation?" Kharge noted with concern that over the past six months, prices of everyday use commodities have witnessed a "huge jump". He said, be it essential medicines, oil, tea, coffee, biscuits or soaps, the rise in prices of all these things have become a problem for the people.
