Bangladesh's Assistant High Commission in Agartala announced on Tuesday that it was suspending its consular services indefinitely, following acts of vandalism by a mob.
The decision came even as the Bangladesh foreign ministry in Dhaka summoned High Commissioner Pranay Verma and lodged a protest over the commotion at the mission. Earlier the ministry had sought a thorough investigation into the incident. Verma told reporters after his meeting with the Foreign Affairs Adviser Mohammad Touhid Hossain that Delhi wants to build a "constant, stable, constructive relationship" with Bangladesh and that no single issue should stand as a barrier to bilateral ties.
In Agartala, meanwhile, seven people were arrested and action taken against four police officers over the storming of the premises. Charged with dereliction of duty, three sub-inspectors were also suspended. Tripura police have since bolstered security around the mission, deploying extra personnel and initiating round-the-clock mobile patrols.
