Mega pain in side due to world's largest spleen

After 'venting' his spleen in agony for 17 years, a Bhayandar man, 38, feels like a weight has lifted off his shoulder, with the surgical removal of his enlarged spleen. And for whatever it is worth, he has entered the record books as having owned the largest spleen in the world.

The life-saving splenectomy revealed to him that over the years, his spleen had grown to 90cm in size and weighed 8.5kg, effectively eating up abdominal space in his body.

The spleen is an accessory organ in the human body, located behind the stomach and under the diaphragm, working primarily to filter blood and offer immune support to the body. The standard size of a spleen is 13cm x 7.5 cm x 3.8cm and it weighs around 170gm.

However, the doctors at Wockhardt Hospital in Mira Road were shocked to find that the patient who had come with a complaint of abdominal pain and swelling, had been 'tenderly' nursing a 90cm-long spleen in his abdomen that was a chunky 8.5kg.
