Who could have thought the bloody unrest in Bangla desh that not only left 250 dead and forced the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to flee to India would have something “fishy” about it?
Yes… among other things, the fish trade and especially the Padma Ilish trade has been hit like never before.
Given the season, Bengalis and fish lovers in India have to bear the brunt because when it rains, it “rains ilish” too and especially the Padma ilish, a must for fish eaters.
NOT JUST A FISH
Padma ilish is not just a fish… it had also been considered as a diplomacy tool.
The silvery hilsa had emerged as a symbol to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries with Hasina using it on several occasions to advance diplomatic goals. She first did so after assuming office in 1996, when she gifted hilsa to the then West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu. This took place just before the Ganga water sharing treaty, a landmark agreement on sharing the waters from the Farakka barrage, was signed between Bangladesh and India.
