India has emerged as the leading source of international students in the United States, with over 330,000 Indians pursuing higher education during the 2023-24 academic year. This is a rise of 23% from the previous year, showing a growing trend among Indian youth seeking global education opportunities in the US.

"This generation of young Indians is seeking a global education, and their families now have the financial resources to support this goal," said Consul General of the United States in Mumbai, Mike Hankey. He cited several factors, including the diversity of programs offered by more than 4,000 American colleges and universities.

"There is growing awareness about the various higher education options available in the United States," he said. The presence of US universities in India, through representational offices and in-country promotional efforts, has further boosted these numbers.

To meet the increasing number of students coming from India, public universities in the US have increased their efforts. "Public universities in the United States are quite large and recognise the benefits of having international students in their classrooms," said Hankey.
