"This is a time of choosing," Biden said during a visit to Mother Emanuel, an African Methodist Episcopal church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine black worshippers were murdered by a white supremacist gunman who they had welcomed to their Bible lesson.
Without mentioning Donald Trump by name, Biden branded his predecessor and likely 2024 opponent a "loser" who had sought to overthrow the will of the 81 million Americans who voted for Biden in 2020. "In their world, these Americans, including you, don't count," Biden said. "But that's not the real world. That's not democracy. That's not America."
Biden's remarks were briefly interrupted by protesters angry at his support for Israel's war in Gaza.
"Ceasefire now," they shouted from the pews. Their calls were drowned out by chanting from the president's supporters: "Four more years." "I understand their passion," Biden said of the protesters. He then told them: "I've been quietly working with the Israeli government to get them to reduce and significantly get out of Gaza."
