The consumer help charity said suppliers were increasingly opting to take customers to court to recover their energy debts, which could ruin household finances for years.
It warned that energy suppliers may increasingly opt to pursue unpaid bills through a county court judgment (CCJ) after the industry regulator, Ofgem, introduced strict restrictions on the forced installations of prepayment meters as a way to recover debts.
Citizens Advice offered support to 349 households that received a CCJ over unpaid gas and electricity bills last year sharply from 179 in 2022 - as energy debts reached a record high of £3.1bn. These numbers are the highest the charity has recorded since 2019 and are understood to represent a fraction of the number of CCJs issued to recover energy debts overall.
