Passengers will benefit from fares capped across an integrated public transport system combining buses and Metrolink trams - and, in the long term, local trains.
With a new Bee Network app that combines contactless payment and live bus information, and tying in the city's walking and cycling networks, Manchester hopes to be going some way towards the kind of joined-up transport available in London, where buses were always left under city control.
Greater Manchester's mayor, Andy Burnham, said the launch of the network - and particularly the introduction of franchising for buses, after a long struggle - was "devolution in England coming of age ... It's a major decision that will have a significant impact on people's lives."
