The 53-year-old remembers almost nothing of the 14 police interviews he endured three decades ago or even much of the Old Bailey trial where he was sentenced to life for murder in 1991.
By the time of his release on licence in 2002, Campbell had been in at least seven institutions, but he has little to say beyond that he enjoyed tending horses at stables near Hollesley Bay, an open prison.
Campbell's lack of recollection is just one of the consequences of the brain damage he suffered from a heavy blow to his head as a baby. Possibly another is a naivety that would have been abundantly clear to police investigating the 1990 murder of Baldev Hoondle, the owner of an off-licence in Hackney.
Campbell was 19 at the time. A number of his incriminating police interviews were conducted without a lawyer present.
