The New York City police commissioner, Jessica Tisch, identified the suspect as Luigi Mangione, 26, during a press conference yesterday.
"At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare," said Tisch.
Mangione had been seen at a McDonald's restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and was recognized by someone who then called the police.
Officers had found Mangione in possession of a firearm suppressor, a mask consistent with those worn by the gunman, a fraudulent New Jersey ID matching one the gunman had used to check into a New York hostel before the shooting, and a handwritten document that "speaks to both his motivation and mindset," Tisch said.
New York detectives were heading to Pennsylvania to interview Mangione further, officials said.
