After 12 months in which she has been at the centre of cultural conversations for her massively lucrative Eras tour, Swift has become the magazine's first person of the year for achievement in the arts. The eight finalists included the OpenAI chief executive, Sam Altman, Vladimir Putin, King Charles, the Donald Trump prosecutors and Barbie.
During the year, the film of Swift's record-breaking tour became the highest grossing concert movie of all time, taking almost £200m; she broke the record for the most number one albums by a woman in the US, beating Barbra Streisand, with 13 in total; and she became the first songwriter to score seven Grammy nominations for song of the year. She told the magazine 2023 had felt like the "breakthrough moment of my career, happening at 33."
The award goes to an event or person deemed to have had the most influence on headlines over the past year. Previous winners have included Barack Obama, Greta Thunberg and Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
