Toll of Hamas attacks Six Britons dead and 10 more missing, Sunak tells Commons

Six Britons are dead and another 10 are missing after the assault by Hamas on southern Israel a week ago, Rishi Sunak has said.

Speaking in the Commons for the first time since the outbreak of war a week ago, the prime minister told MPs that some of those missing were feared dead, though it was proving difficult to identify all of those who had been killed in the attack.

"With a heavy heart I can inform the house that at least six British citizens were killed," Sunak said.

"A further 10 are missing, some of whom are thought to be among the dead. We are working with Israel to establish the effects as quickly as possible. And we are supporting the families who are suffering unimaginable pain." The missing includes two British teenage sisters - named only as Noiya, 16, and Yahel, 13 - the Guardian has been told, although it is unclear if they are included in the 10 the prime minister referred to. It is also understood that their mother, Lianne, was murdered in the attack.

Sunak said the UK would spend £10m on humanitarian aid to Gaza, where 2,750 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes and hundreds of thousands are living without access to electricity and with limited access to water. Britain has also bolstered its military presence in the Mediterranean, while Sunak has embarked on a flurry of diplomacy as part of an international effort to prevent the war becoming a broader regional conflict.
