PLYMOUTH has a new boxing champion after Constantin Ursu demolished opponent Matthew King inside three rounds to win the vacant Southern Area welterweight title at Plymouth’s Guildhall on Saturday.
Moldovan-born Southpaw Ursu had his arm raised in victory after dropping King with a devastating body shot to bring an early end to what was scheduled to be a 10-round contest.
King fell to his knees after a crunching left hand to his midriff with 15 seconds of the third round remaining – but referee Lee Every waved off the contest before the bell to end the round was sounded.
Ursu’s win means he is the city’s first champion since Scott ‘Dynamite’ Dann who retired in 2006, and also puts him in contention for a shot at the English welterweight crown.
His stunning victory quietened a vocal contingent of fans backing the visiting fighter, who came to the Guildhall with only one defeat from his eight professional contests.
Ursu’s victory topped the bill on a highly entertaining 10-fight card which also including a comeback win for ‘Newquay Bomb’ Brad Pauls and a stoppage for North Devon’s Billy Stanbury.
It was a good night for city boxers too, with Polish-born Maciej Jozwik, lightweight Brad O’Connor and welterweight Lewis Everson all recording victories.
Mertys Rowen and Harry Webb, both from Exeter, also recorded victories while in the home corner, although Penzance light heavyweight Dylan Courtney could only draw his bout against durable journeyman Robbie Chapman.
Yet the Ultimate Glory – as the show was billed – was left for Ursu to claim with his history-making win.
