The pony, named Fergie, was discovered by its owners on the verge of the road which links Yelverton to Princetown.
Salted roads in current icy conditions are escalating an ongoing problem. Ponies and other livestock are attracted to eating the salt on the road, meaning they are potentially even more at risk of being hit by traffic.
Drivers are being warned to drive with particular care and attention on Dartmoor during the cold weather - not just for their own safety, but for the sake of animals living on the moor too.
Fergie the pony was owned by a farming family on Dartmoor. Graham Colton, aged 70 and his partner, Verity Nicholls, aged 54 were upset to find the young pony dead on 16 January 2024.
