Friday night League to be named after Yates

THE newly-named Louis Yates Plymouth & District Darts League got off to a cracking start as players returned for another season of the oldest Friday league still in existence.

The committee and team captains voted for the name change in Yates’ honour after he had been secretary of the league for more than half of its life span before retiring from that particular duty in 2023.

Yates still holds positions as league secretary in the Monday Premier and Steve Chapman 501 Leagues, as well as a chair position in the Wednesday Mixed, so is rightly honoured with this permanent fixture in the calendar.

Victory’s Glyn Wells headlined the on board action with 14 ton-plusses in a 13-0 perfect start for the Honicknowle side against Cherry Tree.

Wells was supported well by Jordan Grimshaw, who added a ten-ton personal tally to Wells’ mammoth haul, whilst the pair were also influential in the finishing phase of play.

Wells checked an unbeaten 74, whilst Grimshaw (29.44) put away 100 points in just 34 darts for the best leg of the match.

Matt Legge’s 12 tons led Grenville to a 7-6 win over Falstaff with Legge joining team-mate Harry Harrison in a 37-dart 1001 doubles, the latter also finishing 84 in one visit for the best checkout of the match.

Reigning individual champion Kieran Burns started his season with ten tons in an 11-2 win for King Billy during a visit to Windmill.

Burns’ team-mate, Dylan Webb, hit a maximum and a checkout of 94 that was only bettered by Steve Marker’s 97 kill.

Dave Young took a rare double of the least number of darts and highest checkout in Tradesmans B’s 11-2 defeat to their stablemates, Tradesmans A.
