Guess The Year: When business was brisk in the new year sales at the city's main department stores

THE Herald wrote: "Sales fever grew today as two of Plymouth's largest department stores began their winter sales.

Although there was a notable absence of queues for bargains this morning, with barely 50 people outside Dingles - the smallest number since the store was opened in 1951 - business was brisk inside.'

"Queues outside Spooner's store, too, were smaller this year, and both stores agreed that this was a result of changing trends in sales technique.

"Stores no longer seem drastically to cut a few choice items to provide incentives for queuing, but generally reduce most of the goods in the store.

"Dingles for example, is offering a two shillings (10p) in the pound reduction on all goods not already reduced in the sale."
