DEVONPORT Naval Heritage Centre is to reopen this week with new exhibitions and an interactive gallery which enables visitors a 3D walkthrough of nuclear submarine HMS Courageous.
Volunteers have spent the winter refreshing the heritage centre with better signage and new exhibits – including a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the first use of ‘Devonport’ as a name for the area.
The area was previously known as Plymouth Dock, but was ordered to be renamed Devonport by King William IV in 1824 – and a celebration of the ‘birth’ of Devonport was launched at a VIP opening of the Naval Heritage Centre last week.
