Honours awarded to region's finest
The Herald|December 30, 2023
A MAN who has contributed to both sacred and secular music in the area for more than 40 years is among those from Plymouth to receive New Year Honours.
Honours awarded to region's finest

Brian Gerry has led the Plymouth Area Police Choir since 1986 and raised around £550,000 through various concerts and events. He has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the community.

Brian, who lives in Callington, said he was overwhelmed by the award and was dedicating it to all the people with whom he has been able to share his love of music.

He has been Musical Director of the Plymouth Area Police Choir since 1986, for which he previously received a Commendation from a former Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall.

He was Musical Director of the City of Plymouth Theatre Company for more than 40 years, with his accomplishments including Music of the Night concerts at the Citadel.

In addition to his musical roles, he has been a Methodist Local Preacher for 60 years from 1964 to present and Lay Chaplain to the Lord Mayor of Plymouth on two occasions.

He has taught singing to countless young people, many of whom now perform professionally, and was previously headmaster of four Primary Schools in Devon.

Other Plymouth people honoured include foster carers Pamela and Peter Frickleton who receive the MBE for services to Young People.

Shelley Jane Coleman receives the BEM for services to the community in Plymouth and Girlguiding leader Cheryl Smith also receives the BEM for services to Young People.

Meanwhile Jacqueline Ann Hendra from Plympton, a Social Care Assessor at Devon County Council, also receives the BEM for services to People with Disabilities.

They join England goalkeeper Mary Earps, Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis and Game of Thrones actor Emilia Clarke along with many other stars of sport, stage and screen to be recognised in the New Year Honours list, while the Archbishop of Canterbury leads those rewarded for their work on the King's coronation.
