PLYMOUTH’S Moorland Garden Hotel is being turned into a “luxury” nursing home three years after it closed with debts of more than £1m and almost 60 weddings cancelled. The hotel, situated between Plymouth and Yelverton, was run by Brian and Sonia Meaden, parents of Dragon’s Den TV star Deborah Meaden and boasted 44 en-suite bedrooms and the AA Rosette Wildflower Restaurant.
But the Meadens’ company, the Moorland Garden Hotel Ltd, went into liquidation in 2020. Its sudden closure shattered the dreams of almost 60 couples who lost deposits amounting to more than £137,000.
The hotel was sold for about £1m in November 2020, with £667,000 of that going to Barclays and Barclaycard, which had a fixed charge over the property. It meant unsecured creditors, claiming £156,000, were left to receive just 22p in the pound, documents filed at Companies House revealed.
