The Preston North End boss also thought Argyle had been ‘one of the best footballing teams in the country, let alone League One, at times’.

Lowe delighted to see his old mate take Argyle to next level

STEVEN Schumacher’s Plymouth Argyle are ‘punching way above their weight’ among bigger-spending sides as they fight for automatic promotion out of League One, according to their former manager Ryan Lowe.

Lowe declared that the Pilgrims’ playing budget would not be anywhere close to that of their rivals at the top end of the table, such as Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town.

Lowe is hoping to see Argyle lift the trophy in the Papa Johns Trophy final against Bolton Wanderers at Wembley on Sunday, April 2.

He praised Schumacher for taking Argyle to the next level after succeeding him as manager in December 2021, which is when Lowe left for Championship club Preston.

Lowe got a close-up look at Argyle when he was among the crowd for their 2-0 win away to Accrington Stanley at the rain-soaked Wham Stadium on Tuesday night.

He said: “It’s the first time I have watched them live but I watch them all the time when they are on the TV when we haven’t got a game obviously, and watch all the highlights and keep up-to-date with them.

“Tuesday night wasn’t a great game in terms of the football style that Schuey wants but sometimes when you go away to Accrington like that you have just got to find a way to win.
