PLYMOUTH’S Wilko store is now half-empty, with shoppers saying its loss will be a blow to the city centre.
The shelves are bare in about half of the large Armada Centre shop, with all the stock moved to the front of the premises. The branch looks set to close along with about 300 of the chain’s outlets by early October, after rescue bids fell through.
Poundland owner Pepco has agreed to buy up to 71 Wilko stores but it said these will be “largely in locations in which it has limited presence”, which appears to rule out Plymouth as there is a large Poundland store in New George Street.
Yesterday, Plymouth’s Wilko was busy with bargain hunters looking to take advantage of an administration sale which has taken up to 50% off some items. They were all sad to see the retailer go – and feared for the future of the city centre.
