Street scenes showing the 20th century life and times of Devonport folk

The Box holds over 20,000 items related to Devonport in its collections and is currently celebrating 200 years since this fascinating part of Plymouth - once a separate town changed its name from its original title of Plymouth Dock.

Over the last two centuries, the community in Devonport has experienced huge change; moving from a prosperous, independent town to become part of the larger town and then city of Plymouth; experiencing devastation in the bombing raids of World War Two; and undergoing major regeneration over the last 20 or so years.

These four images are just some of the many black and white photographs in The Box's archives that document the journey Devonport has been on - especially during the 1900s.
