TO make the centenary celebrations of 1924 Congress Session which was presided over by Mahatma Gandhi in Belagavi more special, the Congress party has invited family members of several freedom fighters from Belagavi region who took an active part in the freedom struggle along with Gandhi. The families will be attending the unveiling of a statue of Gandhi at Veera Soudha on December 26.
Chairman of the Centenary Celebrations Committee H K Patil, also Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, met families of some freedom fighters and extended invitations to them. He visited the families of Annu Guruji, Vithalrao Yalgi and Gangadharao Deshpande. Mahesh Deshpande, grandson of Annu Guruji, recalled several events occurred during the freedom struggle which his father had shared with them when he was alive. Mahesh said his grandfather had spearheaded a movement against untouchability which was launched by Gandhi during the freedom struggle.
