Beijing urged to lift domestic demand as threat of US tariffs looms

China's powerful planning body added to calls for the government to bolster domestic demand in an article published a week after Donald Trump's re-election, underscoring Beijing's focus on strengthening the economy with the threat of US tariffs looming.

"In the coming period, the domestic market in China will more clearly dominate the economy cycle," said the commentary, published on Nov 11 in the Economic Daily by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Expanding domestic demand "is not only a strategic need for China's own development, but also helps with resolving the impact of external shocks and the decline in external demand", said the government agency in charge of macroeconomic policy planning.
