SEOUL - President Yoon Suk Yeol's unexpected, and short-lived, declaration of martial law sparked off multiple demonstrations across South Korea on Dec 4, as protesters of all hues rallied to demand that he step down.
The largest demonstration took place near Gwanghwamun Square in north-western Seoul, where organisers estimate that over 10,000 people attended a candlelight rally.
Participants lambasted Mr Yoon for his abrupt decree of martial law, and called for his immediate resignation.
"Step down, Yoon Suk Yeol! Down with Yoon Suk Yeol! Arrest Yoon Suk Yeol!" the participants chanted in unison, holding up lit candles.
Protesters recounted to The Straits Times their shock at hearing about Mr Yoon's martial law decree on Dec 3.
Mr Yoon had justified its imposition, citing his intention to "crush anti-state forces". The decree was unanimously overturned by a National Assembly vote mere hours later.
"I read the news while on my way home from a company dinner (last night)," said 26-year-old Lee Jaeyoung. "I thought I was dreaming."
Added Mr Lee: "I came directly after work to protest. Most people in my company, even my superiors, shared a sense of anger towards Yoon's decision last night."
Another protester, Seoul National University student Yoon Ji-hwan, said he went to the National Assembly as soon as he heard the news.
